Why Biodiversity is Important to Me

I tend to like variety in life, for example, I like variety in cereals, variety in flowers, variety in styles of clothes, and a variety of people. With bio"variety" or in other words biodiversity I get a variety of life in one area. Biodiversity provides me variations of color, sounds, taste, and smell. It also helps to give me a higher quality of life.
Without a large variety of plants I could not breath for the fact that we need many plants to provide oxygen. A variety of plants also provides me with medicine. A variety of animals and plants gives me a diverse diet. If a predator was removed from a food chain, because biodiversity may be being damaged, a species may exceed it's carrying capacity or another organism may die because the predator was what it fed on which would disrupt my food chain. I could come up with many reasons but for the most part these are the main reasons why biodiversity is important to me.

Ways to Protect Biodiversity

  • Legal Protection of Species: If you hurt or kill an endangered species you can be arrested

  • Preserving Habitats: The process of removing wastes and bringing things back to a natural healthy state

  • Reintroduction Programs:  A process where an animal or plant is raised in a controlled environment and reproduced untill it has adequate numbers and can be reintroduced into it's natural habitat

The Threats Damaging Biodiversity

  • Habitat loss: altering or destroying  the factors needed for plants and animals to survive

  • Habitat fragmentation: The loss of a habitat by biological processes that alter the layout of the land gradually.
  • Water pollution: The addition of harmful substances to natural water

  • Land pollution: contamination of the land surface and soil of the earth

  • Introduction of exotics: when plants or animals not native to an evironment are introduced and then destroy the natural cycle
